Finding a therapist is about more than looking at a list of specialties. You are also looking for someone whose personality, approach, and experience feel like a good match for where you are right now.
At Welling Wellness, we know that therapy is not one-size-fits-all. The therapist who feels like the right fit for one person may be completely different from the therapist who feels right for someone else. That’s why we have a team with different specialties, backgrounds, and therapeutic styles.
What Should You Look for in a Therapist?
Your therapist’s specialty is one piece of the puzzle. You may also want to consider their experience working with your age group, the areas they specialize in, and the types of therapy they provide.
Just as importantly, think about how you want therapy to feel. Some people want a therapist who is structured and goal-oriented. Others want more space to process and explore. Some clients are specifically looking for an approach such as EMDR, while others aren’t sure what type of therapy they need yet.
And you don’t have to figure all of that out on your own. You don’t have to know exactly what you’re looking for before reaching out. A good therapist can help you figure that out together, and a good practice should help you find a therapist who feels like the right match for you.
Meet the Therapists at Welling Wellness
Our therapists have different specialties, experiences, and approaches. That means we can take the time to understand what you’re looking for and help connect you with someone who may be a good fit.
Hallie Johnson, LCPC — Lead Therapist
Hallie works with adults and specializes in trauma, anxiety, people-pleasing, self-esteem, perfectionism, attachment styles, ADHD, and women’s mental health, including supporting women who are pregnant, postpartum, or trying to conceive.
She is trained in EMDR through an EMDRIA-approved program and has completed additional training in somatic practices, attachment-based therapy, and developmental trauma.
Hallie’s approach is trauma-informed, affirming, warm, and attachment-based. She creates a space where clients can explore what they are experiencing while developing a deeper understanding of themselves and their patterns.
Hallie may be a particularly good fit if you are looking for a therapist who can help you understand the deeper patterns behind what you’re experiencing and want therapy to feel warm, supportive, and genuinely connected. She may also be a good fit if you’re interested in EMDR or an attachment-based approach.
Lauren McCaffrey, LCSW-C — Licensed Therapist
Lauren works with teens, young adults, and adults. She specializes in neurodiversity, student and college stress, burnout, life transitions, and LGBTQ+ wellness.
Lauren especially enjoys working with teens and young adults who are navigating the transition into adulthood, figuring out who they are, managing school or work, and trying to balance everything at once. She also works with men and clients navigating questions around identity, relationships, and life direction.
Her approach is authentic, collaborative, and affirming. Lauren wants therapy to feel like a space where you can show up as yourself without feeling like you need to have everything figured out.
Lauren may be a particularly good fit if you want therapy to feel authentic, comfortable, collaborative, and honest. She brings warmth and understanding to her work while also being willing to offer direct feedback when it may be helpful. She can be a great fit for someone who wants to feel accepted and understood while also being challenged to look at things from a different perspective.
Angie Rusek, LGPC — Licensed Therapist
Angie works with teens, young adults, adults, and couples. She specializes in anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relationship concerns. She is also trained in Gottman Level 1 for couples therapy.
Angie’s approach is warm, nonjudgmental, and collaborative. She believes therapy should be a space where you can talk about the difficult things, the meaningful things, and everything in between—with openness, warmth, and a little light humor when it fits.
Angie may be a particularly good fit if you want therapy to feel warm, approachable, and nonjudgmental, and you’re looking for someone who can hold space for the difficult parts of life while still allowing room for humor, connection, and the things that make life meaningful.
Isabella Carunungan, LCPC— Licensed Therapist
Isabella works with children, families, and caregivers. She specializes in play therapy, family therapy, parent consulting, life transitions, anxiety, and depression.
For younger children, therapy doesn’t always look like sitting down and talking about what’s wrong. Isabella uses developmentally appropriate approaches to help children communicate, process emotions, and make sense of experiences that may be difficult to put into words.
Her approach is strengths-based, affirming, and trauma-informed. She works not only with the child, but with the important people around them to create support that can continue outside of the therapy room.
Isabella may be a particularly good fit if you are looking for a therapist who understands that children communicate differently than adults and want a space that feels supportive, engaging, and comfortable for both your child and your family.
Devin Fung, LGPC — Licensed Therapist
Devin works with adults and specializes in anxiety, social anxiety, OCD, panic disorders, perfectionism, trauma, mood disorders, women’s mental health, LGBTQ+ health, identity exploration, and the stress that can come with navigating different parts of life and identity.
Devin’s approach is affirming, nonjudgmental, and approachable. They recognize that your identities, relationships, and life experiences all influence the way you see yourself and the world around you.
Devin may be a particularly good fit if you want therapy to feel approachable, affirming, and judgment-free, and you’re looking for a therapist who will make space for your identity, relationships, experiences, and the ways they have shaped how you move through the world.
Maggie Welling, LCSW-C — Lead Therapist & Founder/Owner
Maggie works with teens, young adults, and adults. She specializes in trauma, anxiety, ADHD, depression, stress, sports psychology, and supporting high-achieving professionals.
Her approach is down-to-earth, empowering, and collaborative. Maggie believes therapy should feel like a place where you can be honest about what is actually going on—not just what you think you should be feeling or doing.
She works with clients who may look like they are doing well on the outside but feel overwhelmed, burned out, anxious, or stuck underneath it all.
Maggie may be a particularly good fit if you want therapy to feel down-to-earth, honest, and empowering, particularly if you’re a high achiever who is used to handling things on their own but has reached a point where you don’t want to keep doing it alone.
You Don’t Have to Know Which Therapist Is Right for You
One of the hardest parts of looking for therapy can be knowing where to start.
You might know that you’re anxious but have no idea whether you need CBT, EMDR, or another approach. You might know that your teenager needs support but aren’t sure what type of therapist would be the best fit. Or you may simply know that something doesn’t feel right and want help figuring out what is going on.
You don’t have to have the answers before you reach out.
At Welling Wellness, we can help you think through what you’re looking for and connect you with a therapist based on your age, what you’re experiencing, your goals, and the type of therapeutic relationship you’re hoping to build.
Finding the Right Therapist Is Personal
There isn’t one perfect therapist for everyone.
Sometimes the right fit is someone who understands a particular experience you’ve been through. Sometimes it’s a therapist who specializes in a specific approach. And sometimes it’s simply someone whose personality makes you feel comfortable enough to be honest.
Finding that fit can take a little time, and that’s okay.
At Welling Wellness, our goal isn’t just to connect you with a therapist. It’s to help you find someone who feels like a good fit for you.
If you’re looking for a therapist in Maryland, Washington, DC, or Virginia, Welling Wellness offers virtual therapy throughout those areas, as well as in-person therapy in Federal Hill, Baltimore. Our team works with teens, young adults, adults, couples, children, and families across a range of specialties.
If you’re not sure which therapist is the right fit, contact us. We’re happy to learn a little more about what you’re looking for and help connect you with someone who feels like a good match.
